What is wisdom?

“The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10

Having done an article on fear, it only seemed logical to continue in that direction by completing a word study on wisdom. We’ll begin by using an old copy of Webster’s University Dictionary.

wisdom n.

1.) The quality of being wise; the faculty of making the best use of knowledge; a combination of discernment, judgment, sagacity, and similar powers; understanding

2.) Human learning; erudition; knowledge of arts and sciences; scientific or practical truth.

3.) Quickness of intellect; readiness of apprehension; dexterity in execution; as the wisdom of Bezaleel and Aholiab. – Ex. xxxi. 3,6

4.) Natural instinct and sagacity.

5.) In Scripture, right judgment concerning religious and moral truth; true religion; godliness; piety; the knowledge and fear of God, and sincere and uniform obedience to His commands.

Looking over the definitions it is obvious that the first and fifth most closely represent the type of wisdom described in relation to the fear of God in the Holy Scriptures. Let’s take a moment and go over definition three.

“And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying: Observe that I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to devise designs, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, in cutting stones to finish them, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship. And I, behold I, have appointed with him Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have given wisdom into the hearts of all the wise-hearted, that they may produce all that I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, the ark of the Testimony and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the implements of the tent; the table and its utensils, the pure gold lampstand with all its utensils, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base; the woven garments, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, to serve as priests, and the anointing oil and spiced incense for the holy place. According to all that I have commanded you they shall do.” Exodus 31:1-11

This type of wisdom, though in the above context given by God, is a type of wisdom that men can gain through training, experience and persevering in a certain field. The type of wisdom mentioned in the second definition is more widespread and common.

This type of wisdom is the world’s wisdom. We all have certain skills, understanding, training, education, experience in many things that we do each and every day. For those who drive it is experience that helps prevent you from getting into an accident. For those who are careless and don’t make sure it is clear before they pull out of a parking lot unto a street, it is often experience from accidents, fines, additional insurance costs and time without a vehicle that creates wisdom.

Young college kids often go off and party hard at college. Some become wise against doing such things through seeing what happens when responsibilities are neglected and consequences happen from not being prepared for the next days studies, others get pregnant out of wedlock, some die, some get arrested, some simply get smart, get wisdom and stop hanging out with those who participate in such debauchery.

There are many other examples that could be given, but each of us with experience and knowledge are wise of some of the world’s things. Yet there are all of these experts out there, everywhere if you really look, these are the ones that are considered wise in the world’s eyes.

Those who supposedly have all of this wisdom in this world, what sort of things have they purported to us?

The wise tell us that there is climate change, such as Obama’s new directives or even the pope’s. They tell us that this climate change is caused by man and that man needs to consume less. If you dig into it the real think tanks behind the scenes, those who are the social-psychopathic-engineers of societies, men (and occasionally women) whom most don’t even know exist, they also have plans to lower the number of people living on the earth. They claim to know that the earth is being destroyed by man and they are the ones with the wisdom (and positions of power) to do something about it. What these wise ones are, are liars!

Should they have the true wisdom, the wisdom that comes through learning the Holy Scriptures, the wisdom that directs one’s soul to their Creator and Salvation into His Son, the wisdom that makes a man’s heart repent into dust and ashes before the one and only holy God, then they would also know this:

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with intense burning; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.” 2nd Peter 3:10

“And the fourth angel poured out his bowl onto the sun, and it was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has authority over these plagues; and they did not repent to give Him glory.” Revelation 16:8-9

“So I looked, and behold, a pale green horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed behind him. And authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.” Revelation 6:8

The wise tell us that it is alright to abort babies in the womb. Those who help rip out babies and suck them out with the vacuums, as those poor souls of the yet to breath are sucked into hell, are educated in wisdom, they are doctors, attorneys and the Supreme Court of the United States that does not see the rights of those who have no voice. These people claim to be wise, they purport wisdom to us, they tell us when the fertilized egg supposedly actually becomes a life. Yet what do they know? Who do they think they are? The Most High God gives us wisdom regarding when a soul is alive.

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have become acquainted with understanding.” Job 38:4

“My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.” Psalms 139:15

“Before I formed you in the belly I knew you; and before you came forth out of the womb I consecrated you, and I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

The wise declare to us that we have evolved and that the earth is billions of years old. They search the galaxies ENDLESSLY trying to find earth like planets, not out of simple curiosity, which would not necessarily be wrong, but out of spite, seeking out a planet that appears to be habitable, earthlike, so that they can proclaim to have evidence (of which they have none) about evolution. The wise tell us that dinosaurs went extinct because of an asteroid, they proclaim the ages of rocks, fossils, everything. Even when evidence is found that is contrary they concoct another theory to further propound their supposed educated wisdom. They are fools, declaring that God is a liar. Proclaiming that the works that they see with their eyes, study with their hands was not done by Him who is the Author of Salvation.

Little do these people know that true wisdom, the wisdom that God gives to ALL creation, should they choose to accept it, states the truth in the matter.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

” For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is clearly recognized by them, for God has revealed it to them. For ever since the creation of the world the unseen things of Him are clearly perceived, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they know God, they do not glorify Him as God, nor are thankful, but become vain in their reasonings, and their stupid hearts are darkened. Professing to be wise, they become foolish, and change the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man, and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gives them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who change the truth of God into the lie, and fear and serve the created things more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.” Romans 1:18-25

“The fool has said in his heart, There is no God! They are corrupt; they have done abominable works, there is no one who does good.” Psalms 14:1

Those with wisdom tell of many different ways to get to Heaven or they speak of an afterlife with rewards that can be obtained through obedience to some sort of vain repetitious act or work. These religious leaders of all sorts direct men on paths, yet they all have a common path. Though the paths seem different there is really only two, one is to Life, the other to death. There once again these people, some such as pope Francis who is the leader of over a billion catholics, speak things which are seen as wise, but their wisdom goes down to the gates of hell. These wise leaders refuse to take heed to what the bible states about Salvation, about how a man finds his way Home. They instead are loved by men, telling lies to all who listen to them. God has told man how to find Him, man often seeks to find another way than the Way laid out in the Holy Scriptures.

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many entering in through it. Because narrow is the gate and distressing is the way which leads unto life, and there are few who find it.” Matthew 7:13-14

“Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into the ditch.” Matthew 15:14

“Jesus said to him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6

Example after example could be given of the world’s wisdom. Examples could be given in so-called gay marriage, child-rearing practices, education concepts, life’s focuses, etc.. The Bible gives definitions of wisdom also, some of what we will look at.

“Now, my son, may Jehovah be with you; and may you prosper, and build the house of Jehovah your God, as He has spoken concerning you. Only may Jehovah give you wisdom and understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, to keep the Law of Jehovah your God.” 1st Chronicles 22:11-12

Here David is talking to his son Solomon. Note the reasons that David asks for wisdom and understanding: so that he can rule Israel AND keep the Law of Jehovah his God.

“With Him are wisdom and strength, He has counsel and understanding.” Job 12:13

God alone is wise, men should seek after his counsel.

“No mention shall be made of coral or crystal, for the acquiring of wisdom is above precious stones.” Job 28:18

“From where then does wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding? It is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the birds of the heavens. Abaddon and Death say, We have heard a report of it with our ears. God understands its way, and He knows its place. For He looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heavens, to appoint a weight for the wind, and mete out the waters by measure. When He made a decree for the rain, and a path for the thunderbolt, then He saw and declared it; He prepared it, yea, He searched it out. And to man He said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.” Job 28:20-28

“The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of justice.” Psalms 37:30

“The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise stands eternally.” Psalms 111:10

Man’s wisdom is just that, man’s. Unless that wisdom is from God, no matter how wise a man might appear to be, no matter how many letters are by his name or his title, no matter the amount of supposed facts that are uttered, that wisdom is worthless. Who do you trust with your eternity? Do you trust man’s wisdom or do you trust God? Can you not see the storm clouds on the horizon, do you not worry that it is nearly to late? The time is now to consider and consider with truth and godly wisdom, because through all of this the love of God still abounds, His free gift is still available to all of mankind. Will you consider?

“Then Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the Words of eternal life.” John 6:68

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

“And you shall seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

…” let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, in Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the Stone which was counted as nothing by you builders, which has become the Head of the Corner. Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under Heaven given among men that is required for us to be saved.” Acts 4:10-12
